Salt air and your car’s paint.
Why cars in Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay age faster than the same car inland — and what actually stops it.
If you have owned the same car here and somewhere inland, you already know the difference. Paint that would still look sharp after five years out west goes flat and chalky on this coast in half the time. That is not bad luck. It is chemistry, and it works on your car every day.
What salt air actually does
Salt does not need waves breaking over your bonnet. Onshore wind carries fine salt aerosol several kilometres inland, which covers essentially every suburb we service. It settles on the horizontal surfaces — bonnet, roof, boot lid — and because salt is hygroscopic, it pulls moisture out of the air.
So your paint spends most of the night under a thin film of salt solution even when it has not rained. That film does two things. It speeds up oxidation of the clear coat, which is what turns deep colour into a chalky haze. And wherever the clear coat is already chipped, it gets underneath and starts on the metal. That is how a stone chip becomes a rust bubble.
Why the sun compounds it
UV here is strong, and it degrades clear coat on its own. Combine hard UV with a permanent salt film and the two feed each other: UV breaks down the protective layer, and salt exploits every weakness that opens. It is why coastal cars often look fine for three years and then seem to go quickly. The clear coat holds until it does not.
The parts people forget
- Underneath. Beach access and boat ramps coat the underbody in salt that never dries out properly.
- Door and boot drains. Blocked drains hold salty water against seams, where corrosion starts out of sight.
- Wheels and brake dust. Iron particles embed in the paint and rust in place, showing as tiny orange specks.
- Trim and rubber seals. Salt and UV dry them out, which is how water gets in and interiors start to smell.
What actually works
Washing more often helps a little. Washing badly does more harm than good — a gritty sponge and one bucket is how most swirl marks arrive in the first place. What changes the outcome is putting a barrier between the salt and the paint, and keeping it there.
A wax lasts weeks. A synthetic sealant lasts months. A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat and lasts years, which is why it makes sense on this coast despite costing more up front. Water beads and carries salt off rather than letting it sit, and washing takes a fraction of the time because contamination cannot key into the surface easily.
One honest caveat: a coating preserves whatever condition it goes over. Seal chalky, swirled paint and you lock that in. If the paint has already gone flat, correction comes first — and any detailer who tells you otherwise is selling you something that will disappoint you.
A realistic maintenance rhythm
Unprotected coastal car: a proper wash fortnightly, and a full detail with fresh protection twice a year. Coated car: a maintenance wash monthly, an inspection once a year. Over five years the second routine costs less than the first — which is the argument for protection nobody makes, because making it means admitting the cheaper service is worse value.
