Damp, mould and that musty smell.

A musty car is one of the most common jobs we take on, and one of the most misunderstood. People try three air fresheners, give up, and assume the car is simply old. It usually is not. The smell is biological, it has a source, and covering it with fragrance does nothing except add a second smell.

Why it is so common here

The Northern Rivers is humid for a large part of the year, and humidity alone is enough to keep carpet underlay damp once it has been wet. Add the flooding this region has lived through and there are a great many vehicles still carrying the consequences years later, because a car that was briefly inundated almost never dried out properly underneath.

Wet swimmers, dogs, surf gear and school bags do the rest. Moisture goes into the carpet, the underlay holds it against the floor pan, and mould grows in the dark where nobody looks.

Where the smell actually lives

• Carpet underlay, not the carpet. The visible surface dries; the foam beneath it does not.
• Under the seats and in the seat foam, especially where a spill soaked in.
• The cabin air filter, which is a damp paper trap for spores.
• Air-conditioning evaporator, where condensation sits in the dark.
• Boot well and spare wheel cavity, the single most overlooked spot in the car.
• Blocked door and sunroof drains, which quietly deposit water inside the sills.

Why shampooing alone often fails

Wet-shampooing a carpet and leaving it puts more water into exactly the layer that is already the problem. Done without proper extraction it can leave a car smelling worse a week later. The work that matters is extraction — pulling the moisture and the contamination back out — plus finding and fixing the source, whether that is a blocked drain, a perished seal or a filter that should have been replaced years ago.

What we actually do

Find the source first. Then hot-water extraction through carpets and seats, steam where it suits the material, a full clean of the boot well and spare cavity, and the cabin filter checked. Then the car is dried properly rather than handed back damp. If the source is mechanical — a leaking seal, a blocked drain — you get told, because cleaning it without fixing that means you are back in three months.
